Our Story
Built on One Simple Belief.
Every young person has greatness inside them. They just need someone who believes in them first.
How We Started
One Mentor. One Student. A Movement.
Reach 1 Teach 1 was founded in 2016 by a group of Army service members that were stationed at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio TX. Coach Reed was among the leaders who saw a gap that no school program was filling — the gap between a struggling student and a caring adult who had time to truly show up.
What started as a small lunch time mentoring circle of 3 mentors and a few students has grown into a structured program serving youth across multiple partnering schools. Our name says it all: if each of us reaches back to lift one person, the ripple effect is unstoppable.
Today, we are a team of passionate men and volunteer mentors, and a network of school partners united by one mission — to make sure no child walks their journey alone.
Mission & Vision
Our Mission
To connect youth with caring mentors who help them build confidence, improve academic outcomes, and discover their full potential.
Our Vision
A community where every young person has at least one trusted adult champion in their corner — and the tools to thrive.
What We Stand For
Our Core Values
Show Up
Consistency is the foundation of trust. We commit to being present — week after week — because our youth deserve reliability.
See the Whole Child
We meet every young person where they are — academically, emotionally, and socially — without judgment or conditions.
Community First
We are rooted in the neighborhoods we serve. Our mentors, staff, and partners reflect the communities we work alongside.
Grow Together
Mentorship is a two-way street. Our mentors grow just as much as our youth — in empathy, leadership, and purpose.
The Man Behind the Mission
Meet Our Team
We are educators, community builders, and lifelong learners — united by a belief that relationships change lives.
The Man Behind the Mission
Mr.reed
Lead Mentor and Founder
Shawn Reed is the Founder and Lead Drill Mentor of Reach 1 Teach 1 Youth Mentorship Program. A former troubled youth who was fortunate to have strong mentors and positive role models, Mr. Reed is passionate about being that same source of guidance and inspiration for today's youth.
A five-year Army veteran and current police officer, he brings discipline, structure, leadership, and accountability to his mentorship approach. Through a unique military-inspired mentoring model, Mr. Reed motivates young people to excel both in the classroom and in athletics while teaching them the importance of confidence, perseverance, respect, and personal responsibility.
